Frequently asked questions

What is an aluminium louvre roof pergola?
An aluminium louvre roof pergola is a freestanding or attached outdoor structure with adjustable horizontal blades (louvres) that rotate to control sunlight, shade, and rain. Unlike a fixed-roof pergola, you can open the blades for sunlight in winter and close them for shade or rain protection in summer.
Do I need council approval for a pergola in Sydney?
Approval requirements depend on the size and height of the structure and how close it sits to your boundary. Some pergolas qualify as exempt development, while larger structures or those close to a boundary may need approval. We handle all permit applications as part of our service — no council headaches for you.
Can the louvre roof open and close?
Yes — our louvre blades rotate 0–135° via an electric motor, controlled by remote, wall switch, or smartphone app. You can also add rain and wind sensors that auto-close the blades when it starts raining or when wind speeds become too high.
What sizes are available?
Louvre roof pergolas are made to measure, with blade spans up to 4.5 m. Typical Sydney projects range from a 3m × 3m attached roof over a balcony to an 8m × 5m freestanding structure over an alfresco or pool area. Height, post placement and blade direction are confirmed at the free on-site design visit. Both freestanding and attached designs come in 6 standard powder-coat colours.
Pergola vs gazebo — what's the difference?
A pergola has a flat or louvre roof supported by posts, typically attached to the house. A gazebo is freestanding with a pitched or domed roof, usually smaller. Pergolas offer more flexibility (adjustable louvres, larger spans) and integrate better with the house. Gazebos are better for standalone garden features.
How do I maintain my pergola?
Minimal maintenance required. Wash the aluminium frame and blades annually with mild soap and water. Check that louvre motors and sensors function correctly each season. Clear leaf debris from blade gutters. No painting or rust-proofing needed — the powder coat is guaranteed for 10 years.
Can I add lighting or heaters to my pergola?
Yes. We offer integrated LED strip lighting (dimmable, colour-changing options), pendant light mounting points, and electric infrared heater brackets. All electrics are pre-wired during installation and certified by a licensed electrician.
What warranty do pergolas come with?
A 10-year warranty on the aluminium frame and powder coat. Warranty on louvre motors, sensors, and electronic components. Warranty on LED lighting. Extended warranties available for commercial installations.
How much does a louvre roof pergola cost in Sydney?
In 2026, expect AU$1,200–$2,500 per m² supplied and installed. A typical 4×3m louvre roof pergola costs $15,000–$30,000 depending on blade span, motorisation and finish. Compare quotes on a per-square-metre basis and check blade span and extrusion quality, not just the total.
Is a louvre roof pergola waterproof in heavy rain?
Closed louvre blades are weather-resistant, not waterproof. In light-to-moderate rain they keep the area dry, but wind-driven rain can enter at gutters and wall junctions. Ask for the waterproofing position in writing before you buy, and consider side Zipscreen on the weather side.
Will a louvre roof pergola make my alfresco hotter in summer?
Not if it is specified and oriented correctly. A closed louvre roof provides full shade, and opening the blades slightly vents rising hot air. Avoid dark, fully closed roofs with no airflow, and screen the western side with Zipscreen to stop the low afternoon sun.
What motor warranty and servicing should I expect on a pergola?
Motor warranties are often shorter than the frame warranty — commonly 12–24 months — and separate call-out fees may apply. Ask about motor cover, service intervals and part lead times before you buy. Every Sync pergola includes a 10-year warranty on the aluminium frame and powder coat.
