Made-to-measure curtains for Inner West homes
Made in our own workroom, hung in yours.
The Inner West is terrace country. Newtown, Enmore, Marrickville, Petersham, Leichhardt, Annandale, Balmain, Rozelle, Ashfield, Summer Hill and Haberfield are built on Victorian and Federation housing — long, narrow, high-ceilinged, with tall windows and, in a great many of them, a bay.
That shape of house is exactly why off-the-shelf curtains disappoint here. A 2.2 metre curtain in a room with a 3.2 metre ceiling stops in mid-air, and a straight rod across a bay window leaves the recess empty and gaps at both returns. Curtains in this housing stock have to be measured and made for the window — which is what we do, in our own workroom in Auburn, inside the Inner West.
Victorian terraces, narrow frontages and tall windows — the housing stock that makes off-the-shelf curtains the wrong buy and made-to-measure the normal one.
What Inner West homes actually have
Measured on site, not assumed from a map.
Terraces with high ceilings and tall windows
A typical Inner West terrace has ceilings between 3 and 3.6 metres and tall, narrow windows to match. Standard curtain drops are cut for modern ceiling heights, so they finish well above the floor and the room looks unfinished. Made-to-measure means the drop is right, the heading suits the period, and the curtains reach the floor the way the room was designed for.
Bay windows and return walls
Bays are everywhere in this housing stock, and they are the single most common reason a straight curtain rod looks wrong: it either sits proud of the bay and leaves the recess empty, or it crosses the opening and leaves a gap at each return. A shaped track that follows the bay is what the window was built for, and it is a routine job for us rather than a special order.
Made in our own workroom, in the Inner West
Every curtain we sell is cut, sewn and finished in our workroom in Auburn — the same team that measures your window, and the same business that installs it. Nothing is subcontracted and nothing is drop-shipped from an overseas factory, which is why a non-standard drop or a curved bay track does not turn into a four-week lead time.
Street-facing windows, noise and heat
Most Inner West terraces front straight onto the street, so the front rooms take traffic noise as well as the sun. A lined curtain with a separate sheer layer does something blinds cannot: the fabric mass absorbs sound, and the air gap between the sheer and the blockout adds a thermal layer right at the glass. On a west-facing front room in summer that is measurable, not theoretical.
Heritage areas and strata
Parts of the Inner West sit in heritage conservation areas, and there are apartment buildings through Burwood, Strathfield and Homebush with strata by-laws. The useful thing to know is that internal curtains generally need neither approval: they do not alter the external appearance of the building. External blinds, awnings and shutters do, and those need written consent.
Real installations near Inner West
The Inner West terrace job is the closest comparison to a Newtown or Marrickville front room — a tall street-facing window dressed floor-to-ceiling. The Mosman heritage home is the reference for a period house that needs a pelmet and a heading style to suit the original cornices.

What Curtains costs in Inner West
Read these as averages, not as a quote for your home.
| Job | Typical range | What moves the number |
|---|---|---|
| Curtain, single layer, made to measure | AU$400 – AU$1,000+ per window | Fabric by the metre, how much fullness you want, and whether it is lined. |
| Full double-track wall (sheer plus blockout) | AU$2,000+ per wall | Total track length, fabric choice, and whether the track is motorised. |
| Shaped track for a bay window | Add AU$150 – AU$400 per bay | Whether the bay is angled or curved, and how many returns it has. |
| Motorised track | +AU$500 – AU$1,200 per wall over manual | Track length, motor grade, and whether it integrates with a smart-home system. |
These are Sydney averages, not a quotation. Inner West jobs are priced after a measure — fabric by the metre, fullness and the number of bays are the three biggest variables. Read as an average, not a quotation.
Inner West — questions we get from this area
Why terraces need made-to-measure
The window shape is the whole argument.
High ceilings, tall narrow windows
Three metres of ceiling with a 2.4 metre window is the standard Inner West front room. A ready-made drop stops in mid-air and the room never looks finished — which is why almost every job here starts with measuring the drop, not choosing a fabric.
Bays, returns and period headings
A bay is the reason a straight rod looks wrong. A shaped track follows the window and closes the returns, and the heading style can be matched to the original cornices and ceiling rose rather than fighting them.
