Awnings for Sutherland Shire homes
Block the western sun before it reaches the glass — Cronulla to Engadine.
The Sutherland Shire is a big, green, low-rise part of Sydney: brick and brick-veneer homes on generous blocks, most of them built between the 1960s and the 1990s, with the kitchen and living area opening onto a rear deck or patio. And on most of those blocks, the rear of the house faces west.
That is why an awning is usually the right answer here rather than an indoor blind. By the time afternoon sun reaches a roller blind it has already crossed the glass and the heat is inside the room. A folding-arm awning blocks the radiation before it gets that far, and on a west-facing Shire living room the difference is obvious from about 2pm.
Brick home, west-facing rear deck, awning out — the standard Sutherland Shire afternoon problem, and the reason the back of the house is the hot part.
What Sutherland Shire homes actually have
Measured on site, not assumed from a map.
Brick homes with the living areas at the back
The typical Shire home is a brick or brick-veneer house on a 550–700 m² block, with the kitchen, dining and living room strung along the rear wall. On most blocks that rear wall faces west, which is why the back of the house is the hot part of the house, and why the deck or patio behind it becomes uncomfortable in the middle of the afternoon.
Cronulla, Caringbah, Gymea and Woolooware: salt in the air
Within a few hundred metres of the ocean, salt spray corrodes cheap fixings and low-grade arms long before the fabric wears out — and a seized arm is not a manufacturing defect. Powder-coated aluminium arms, stainless fixings and a marine-grade fabric are worth the premium on that side of the Shire. Set well back from the water and sheltered by other buildings, standard hardware is usually fine, and we will tell you honestly which applies at your measure.
Rear decks that are unusable from about 2pm in summer
This is the actual complaint we get from the Shire. The deck is the main outdoor room, it faces west, and from early afternoon through summer nobody can sit on it. A folding-arm awning over the sliding door is the direct fix — and because it stops the sun before the glass, the room behind it stays noticeably cooler as well, which is the part most people do not expect.
Sloping blocks, bushland and rear yards that step down
Engadine, Heathcote, Menai, Bangor and parts of Gymea are cut into the hillside, so the deck is often a level above or below the house. That changes the fixing height, the wind exposure and sometimes the access. We measure on site and confirm all three before quoting, rather than assuming a flat block and finding out on install day.
Strata in Miranda, Sutherland and Cronulla apartment buildings
The Shire has a lot of older walk-up apartment blocks, and anything fixed to the external face of a strata building — which an awning is — generally needs written owners-corporation approval. Get it before you order, not after. We can supply the product specification and a plain description of the installation to attach to your application.
Real installations near Sutherland Shire
All three are completed Sync Blinds installations. Manly is the closest comparison to a Cronulla or Woolooware balcony — exposed, salt in the air, marine-grade fabric. The Eastern Suburbs patio is the motorised-with-wind-sensor job that most exposed Shire decks end up wanting.

Read these as averages, not as a quote for your home.
| Job | Typical range | What moves the number |
|---|---|---|
| Straight-drop window awning, single window | AU$200 – AU$600 per window | Window width, the drop you need shaded, and whether the frame has to be colour-matched. |
| Manual folding-arm awning, 3–4 m | AU$1,500 – AU$4,000 per awning | Arm span, the fabric you choose, and whether you want a protective hood over the rolled fabric. |
| Motorised folding-arm awning, 3–4 m | AU$3,000 – AU$7,000+ per awning | The span you need covered, the motor grade, and whether you want wind automation or a plain switch. |
| Coastal specification — salt-rated fabric and stainless hardware | adds roughly 15–25% to the figures above | How exposed the position actually is. Cronulla, Caringbah, Gymea and Woolooware jobs are quoted with this as standard. |
These are Sydney averages, not a quotation. Shire jobs are priced after an on-site measure — exposure, fixing substrate and access all move the number. Read as an average, not a quotation.
Sutherland Shire — questions we get from this area
Two Shire jobs, two different answers
How exposed the opening is decides what we fit.
Decks that face the afternoon sun
The rear wall faces west on most Shire blocks, so the deck and the room behind it take the full load from about 2pm. A folding-arm awning over the sliding door fixes the deck and cools the room at the same time.
Courtyards that need shade, not a roof
A paved rear courtyard that bakes in the afternoon does not need a pergola. A retractable awning gives you shade when the sun is on it and disappears when it is not — which is a fraction of the cost of a permanent structure.
