Do awnings actually reduce heat inside the house?
Yes — external awnings block solar radiation before it reaches the glass, cutting solar heat gain by up to around 80%. Indoor blinds only deal with heat that has already passed through the window, so external shade is far more effective on a west-facing room.
Do I need council approval for a folding arm awning in NSW?
Folding arm awnings are usually exempt from council approval if they are 20m² or less, project no more than 2m, sit at least 900mm from boundaries and are no more than 3m high. Strata and company-title properties still need owners-corporation approval.
How much do folding arm awnings cost in Sydney?
In 2026, expect roughly AU$1,500–$4,000 for a manual folding arm awning supplied and installed, and AU$3,000–$7,000+ for a motorised unit with a wind sensor, depending on width and fabric. Compare quotes on the same specification.
Can a folding arm awning handle Sydney wind and storms?
A folding arm awning is designed for sun, not storms. Retract it in anything more than a light breeze — wind and storm damage is usually excluded from warranty. A motorised awning with an automatic wind sensor is the best protection.
What should I check before mounting an awning?
Awnings are heavy and put significant load on the wall in wind. On brick veneer the fixing often needs to reach a beam or a reinforced point rather than just the brick face. Ask your installer to assess the substrate before quoting.
Is an awning better than window tint or indoor blinds?
For heat reduction, yes. An awning blocks the sun before it hits the glass, while tint and indoor blinds act only after the heat has entered. For a west-facing wall, combine an external awning with indoor blockout blinds for the best result.
